It now rewards you with bonus perks that make the action a little easier. If this all sounds a little too challenging, Team Ninja reworked Nioh's level-based exploration. Jumping mechanics and elevated environments play into this new attack, so there are many opportunities to leap from platforms and plunge sword-first onto foes. Unlike its predecessors, Wo Long has aerial deathblows that let you drop on unsuspecting enemies from above to deliver a visceral attack. You can also perform stealth deathblows by sneaking up on enemies.
If you break an enemy’s posture, you can unleash a finisher like in the Nioh games. This early mini-boss becomes a common enemy. You aren't bound to magic points or a specific number of spells like in conventional RPGs you can cast magic or perform weapon arts as long as you correctly manage the spirit meter.
In practice, this system works brilliantly. When the gauge fills with negative spirit, your character becomes winded and vulnerable to a follow-up attack. Overusing those moves, or excessively blocking, builds negative spirit. When playing aggressively, you build positive spirit that's used to unleash powerful attacks. Wo Long is challenging, but it feels fair and extraordinarily rewarding once you understand the systems at play.īeneath your health meter is a spirit gauge, which is effectively Sekiro's posture gauge. Like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Wo Long requires you to parry in time with an enemy’s attacks-only at a faster pace. In fact, Wo Long's evasion technique involves an awkward double-tap of the parry button it’s functional, but clearly not what you should do to avoid damage. Blocking and parrying are integral to your defense, unlike the more evasion-focused Nioh titles. However, Wo Long’s gameplay features notable deviations.

Wo Long is the spiritual successor to the Nioh series and could be easily confused with those games at a glance. A co-op battle against the Yellow Turbans. Still, in terms of pure gameplay, Wo Long improves on the Nioh formula in many areas.

That said, this PC game isn't a complete success, suffering from drab stages and an incoherent narrative. Wo Long has a focus on parries and counters, a stamina system that encourages aggressive play, and a new jumping mechanic that spices up mobility. Developer Team Ninja has cooked up another action-RPG in the same vein as the crew's Sengoku-inspired Nioh games, but one that's set in China’s Three Kingdoms era instead of 17th-century Japan.
